Online psychotherapy sessions

Online sessions allow continuity and accessibility. They are suitable in many situations, but not all — suitability is assessed case by case.

What we are talking about

Online sessions take place by video call, with the same structure and ethical framework as in-person sessions. They are particularly useful for people living outside Lisbon or abroad, or with schedules or health conditions that make travel difficult.

When it may be suitable

  • · Continuity of care when moving or travelling.
  • · Difficulty travelling for health, mobility or scheduling reasons.
  • · Living outside the Lisbon area or abroad.
  • · Informed preference, when there are no clinical contraindications.

When it may not be the best option

In situations of high clinical risk, marked instability, or when in-person assessment or close coordination with other care is needed. In those cases, in-person sessions or an appropriate referral are proposed.

What you will need

  • · A private space without interruptions during the session.
  • · A stable internet connection.
  • · Headphones whenever possible, for greater privacy.
  • · Availability for the full session time.

Languages

Sessions are conducted in Portuguese or English.

What to expect from a first session

The first session is mainly about understanding the current situation: what brought you here, for how long, and how it is interfering with daily life. It is also a space to gather relevant history and context, clarify needs and expectations, and make an initial assessment of whether psychotherapy is a suitable response.

Next steps are defined together at the end. If psychotherapy is not the most appropriate answer, that is said clearly and alternatives are suggested.
